PANEL DEBATE "Do we get what we deserve from Germany, the World's leading source market?"

Our Association organized a Panel Debate and presentation of the latest developments in the German travel market. The presentation was made by Ms Heike Beller of the German Firm FVW Media Group.

A large number of tourism professionals discussed the problems, prospects and opportunities to develop tourism from Germany.

All participants had the opportunity to contribute to this debate by making their own suggestions and recommendations. These suggestions and recommendations will be further discussed with the Cyprus Tourism Organization, which for sure will be extremely useful in their effort to promote tourism from Germany.

Round-Table Discussion "Business and Economic Opportunities between Germany and Cyprus"

Our Association in co-operation with the Paphos Chamber of Commerce and Industry organized on Wednesday, May 11 a Round-Table Discussion titled "Business and economic opportunities between Germany and Cyprus".

Present at this event that took place in Paphos was a large number of members of our Association, members of the Paphos Chamber and also German Businesspeople who live and operate in the Paphos region.

Mr George Leptos, President of the Paphos Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Mr George Michaelides, President of our Association, and H.E. Dr Gottfried Zeitz, Ambassador of Germany in Cyprus, addressed the event.

The business and economic opportunities between Germany and Cyprus were presented and also ways to develop further these economic ties were explored. The German market is an important factor to the economy of Cyprus and this is indicated by the fact that Germany was the number one buyer of the Cypriot exports in 2010.

Special mention was made to the recent signing of the Double-Tax Treaty between the Governments of Cyprus and Germany. The new agreement presents improved provisions regarding dividends, interest, capital gains and shipping.

The Agreement for the avoidance of double taxation will give a new dimension to business relations between Cypriot and German investors and entrepreneurs.

New prospects for the development of the Cyprus-Germany business relations.

The Cyprus-Germany Business Association welcomes the signing of the Cyprus-Germany agreement for the avoidance of double taxation.

The new agreement adopts the OECD (Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development) measure for transparency and exchange of information for taxation purposes. Improved provisions are also envisaged regarding dividends, interest, capital gains and shipping.

It is noteworthy that a special committee of the Association had contributed towards the drafting of the agreement.

The President and the members of the Board of Directors of the Association underline that the Agreement for the avoidance of double taxation will give a new dimension to business relations between Cypriot and German investors and entrepreneurs.

Within the framework of its activities, the Association has plans for promoting Cyprus in Germany as an International Financial and Business Center towards the end of 2011, as well as other promotional activities in Cyprus.

 

Annual General Meeting & Business Lunch Speech

The Association’s Annual General Meeting was held at the Londa Hotel in Limassol on Thursday, 27 May 2010. Present at the General Meeting was H.E. the Ambassador of Germany in Cyprus Dr Gottfried Zeitz, who reaffirmed the full support of the German Embassy to the activities and events organized by the Association for the further development of the trade and economic relations between Cyprus and Germany.

In his address, the President of the Association Mr George Michaelides referred to the achievements of the Association during the past year. Special mention was made about the two Business Forums organized by the Association and the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce & Industry in cooperation with the Cyprus Ministry of Commerce, Industry & Tourism and the Chambers of Commerce of Hamburg and Frankfurt in October 2009.

In the elections held for the new Board of Directors, Mr George Michaelides was unanimously re-appointment as the President of the Association.

A business lunch followed the conclusion of the General Meeting, with key note speaker Mr Thomas Kazakos, Director General of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber.

The title of Mr Kazakos’ speech was “The new Cyprus Shipping Taxation System”. The new taxation system was recently approved by the European Commission and strengthens the competitiveness of Cyprus and upgrades the country as one of the most developed in the field of global shipping. The President of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Mr Manthos Mavrommatis, in a brief address described Cyprus, and more particularly Limassol, as the future metropolis of global shipping.

Cyprus-German Business Forums in Hamburg and Frankfurt

Two Business Forums were organised with great success in Hamburg and Frankfurt by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Cyprus-Germany Business Association in close cooperation with the Cyprus Ministry of Commerce, Industry & Tourism, the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and the Frankfurt Chamber of Commerce. The Business Forum in Hamburg took place on 27 October 2009 and in Frankfurt on 29 October 2009.

At the head of the Cypriot delegation was Mr Antonis Pascalides, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, and participants included a big number of Cypriot entrepreneurs who had business meetings with German businessmen.

During the two Forums, presentations of the tax and legal system of Cyprus were given and the advantages for foreign investors with interest for investing in Cyprus were stressed. The opportunities offered for investments in the tourism sector and the advantages Cyprus offers to shipping companies were also presented.

The Cyprus-Germany Business Association was represented at the Forums through the participation of some of its members and the presentation made by its President, Mr George Michaelides. Mr Michaelides presented the topic on the opportunities offered in Cyprus for investments in the tourism sector. This topic attracted much interest from the German participants of the two Forums.

The close economic ties of Cyprus and Germany were underlined during the forums and the benefits of Cyprus were projected as an international economic centre with special reference to the prospects for broadening such cooperation.

Business Forums in Germany

The Cyprus Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Cyprus-Germany Business Association, in cooperation with the Cyprus Ministry of Commerce, Industry & Tourism are organising 2 Business Forums in Germany aiming to the promotion of Cyprus as an International Financial and Business Centre.

The Business Forums are scheduled to take place:

27 October 2009 – Hamburg
29 October 2009 – Frankfurt

Cocktail-Speech

The Cyprus-Germany Business Association organised on 5 March 2009 a Cocktail-Speech at the Hilton (Cyprus). The speaker was H.E. the Ambassador of Germany in Cyprus Dr Gottfried Zeitz. The topic of the Speech was “The heritage of Adam Smith in times of a global crisis”.

Πραγματοποιήθηκε την Τρίτη 18 Μαρτίου 2008 στο Μέγαρο του ΚΕΒΕ στη Λευκωσία, η ιδρυτική συνέλευση του Κύπρο-Γερμανικού Επιχειρηματικού Συνδέσμου, ο οποίος ανήκει στη δύναμη του ΚΕΒΕ.

Στη συνέλευση, ο πρόεδρος του ΚΕΒΕ, κ. Μάνθος Μαυρομάτης μίλησε για τους πολύ δυνατούς οικονομικούς δεσμούς και πολύ καλές εμπορικές σχέσεις που έχει η Κύπρος και η Γερμανία. Υπάρχουν όμως απεριόριστες ευκαιρίες συνεργασίας καθώς η Γερμανία έχει μεγάλο φάσμα προϊόντων που ενδιαφέρουν τον Κύπριο καταναλωτή και τον Κύπριο εμπορευόμενο. Ακολούθως, ο κ. Μαυρομάτης, σημείωσε ότι ο Σύνδεσμος θα δουλέψει για την προώθηση της Κύπρου ως Διεθνές Επιχειρηματικό Κέντρο.

Ο ΓΓ του ΚΕΒΕ, κ. Παναγιώτης Λοiζίδης σημείωσε ότι το ΚΕΒΕ έχει ήδη πολύ στενές σχέσεις με τα Γερμανικά επιμελητήρια τα οποία θα πρέπει να παίξουν ένα πολύ σημαντικό ρόλο στην ανάπτυξη επιχειρηματικών συνεργασιών μεταξύ των δυο χωρών.

Στη διάρκεια της Γενικής Συνέλευσης, έγιναν αρχαιρεσίες στις οποίες εκλέγηκε το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο, το οποίο απαρτίζουν οι ακόλουθοι:
